Hero Junos 2026

The 2026 Juno Awards: The Legendary Musical Highlights

Art & Culture National

The 2026 Juno Awards was packed with real milestones, epic moments, and a snapshot of where Canadian music is right now.

Held in Hamilton and hosted by Mae Martin, the show balanced legacy acts with a new generation of artists shaping the industry. Here’s what actually happened.

1. Rush Opened the Show with a Historic First

One of the biggest moments was also one of the most surprising: Rush performed on the JUNO stage for the first time ever.

More than 50 years after being named “Most Promising Group” in 1975, the band’s appearance wasn’t just nostalgia — it was a full-circle moment that set the tone for the night.

2. Joni Mitchell Honoured with a Major Tribute

Joni Mitchell received the Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by Prime Minister Mark Carney, and was celebrated with a tribute led by Sarah McLachlan and Allison Russell.

This was one of the emotional anchors of the night — recognising one of Canada’s most influential artists and her lasting impact on music globally.

3. Nelly Furtado Inducted into the Hall of Fame

Nelly Furtado was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, with a presentation by Drake.  She also received a Juno tribute performance, including Alessia Cara, Jully Black, Shawn Desman, Tanya Tagaq, Lido Pimienta, and Kardinal Offishall.

Her induction marked recognition of her global influence and long-standing role in shaping Canadian pop music.

4. Tate McRae Dominated the Awards

If there was one artist who owned the night, it was Tate McRae.

She took home multiple major awards, including Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, and Single of the Year — making her the most awarded artist of the night and signalling the rise of a new Canadian global star.

5. Breakout Artists and Genre Diversity Took Centre Stage

The weekend highlighted how broad Canadian music has become:

  • Cameron Whitcomb won Breakthrough Artist and Country Album of the Year
  • Daniel Caesar took home major awards including Songwriter of the Year
  • A new Latin category debuted, with Alex Cuba from Quebec winning its first award

Genres spanned pop, country, R&B, Latin, and more — showing that Canadian music doesn’t fit one box.

6. Amplifying Indigenous Voices at the Juno Awards

Indigenous artists commanded a powerful presence at the Juno Awards, showcasing the depth and diversity of Indigenous voices in Canada’s music industry. From traditional categories to mainstream genres, these creators are driving the evolution of Canadian music.

Several incredible artists stood out this year:

  • Aysanabee (Sandy Lake First Nation): Won Alternative Album of the Year and Contemporary Indigenous Artist or Group of the Year for Edge of the Earth.
  • Bear Creek: Powwow drum group from Anishinabek communities, won Traditional Indigenous Artist or Group of the Year for On the Move.
  • Morgan Toney (Wagmatcook & We’koqma’q First Nations): Won Traditional Roots Album of the Year for Heal the Divide.
  • Snotty Nose Rez Kids (Haisla Nation): Nominated for Rap Single of the Year for “DUMB” with SonReal. Watch on YouTube | Listen on Spotify
  • William Prince (Peguis First Nation): Nominated for Contemporary Roots Album of the Year for Further From the Country and performed with Sarah McLachlan, Allison Russell, and Joni Mitchell.
  • Tanya Tagaq: Inuk singer delivering a show-stopping performance as part of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame tribute for Nelly Furtado.

7. Québec Artists at the 2026 JUNO Awards

Québec artists were well represented at the 2026 JUNO Awards — though largely in francophone and non-broadcast categories rather than the main televised spotlight.

In the Francophone Album of the Year category alone, several major Québec names were nominated, including:

  • Ariane Roy
  • Fredz
  • Pierre Lapointe
  • Jean-François Pauzé
  • Lou-Adriane Cassidy

These artists represent a strong cross-section of Québec’s music scene — from indie pop and chanson to hip-hop and alternative.
